HISTORY

Cumberland County was established in 1748 from the east side of Salem County. It was named for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. The county was divided it into six townships: Greenwich, Hopewell, Stow Creek, Deerfield, Fairfield, and Maurice River. In 1748, Cohansey Bridge (now Bridgeton) was chosen as the seat of county government. In 1752, Cumberland County's first court house was built in the center of West Broad Street.
Cumberland County has grown into a region of almost 150,000 people with a rich cultural heritage of 14 townships, boroughs, and municipalities. Founded on a firm agricultural base, which continues to flourish today, progress had brought the glass, canning, oyster, and clothing industries to the County.
